With just a couple of weeks to go before the big day—and yes, we mean Valentine’s Day, not Super Bowl LX—it’s officially time to start planning. Especially since this year’s romance-fest lands on Beacon’s Second Saturday weekend when venues and restaurants are already humming with things to do.

A little planning now means less last-minute scrambling later. The Beacon Beacon can help you decide exactly where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing, whether you’re celebrating, anti-celebrating, or just along for the vibes.

Early Celebrations

If you’re looking for an early tongue-in-cheek fun night out, then save the date for Dawn of the Drag on Wednesday February 11th at Happy Valley Arcade Bar (296 Main Street), starting at 7:00 PM. Bubbles & Bruce Neese will be presenting a movie screening of Jennifer’s Body as well as a drag show.

Jennifer’s Body—written by Diablo Cody and starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried—is a 2009 comedy horror film about a demonically possessed high school student who kills her male classmates and devours their flesh to retain her health and beauty. Come ready for a prom night contest, too. Tickets are $15 on the door.

A Galentine’s Night Out

In our humble opinion, Valentine’s Day is so much more than a celebration of romantic love. For us, it’s a chance to celebrate every kind of love: love for your best friends, cat, dog, or even a natural beauty like Mount Beacon.

So, if you’re planning a night out with gal pals rather than a significant other, Galentine’s Night Out on Thursday, February 12th at the Bourbon Bar at Vincent’s (331 Main Street) might be for you. The night features local vendors including BIJOU Charm Bar (permanent jewelry), Kaitlyn’s Creations Make Your Own Bouquet, and Honorable Ink flash tattoos. Enjoy drinks specials all night and no cover. Starts 6:00 PM.

Also on Thursday, February 12th, you can grab your best gals and join That Creative Space (333 Fishkill Avenue) for a fun, feel-good Galentine’s Day Candle Painting Night. During this one-and-a-half-hour creative event you learn how to decorate and personalize your own set of painted candlesticks. You’ll choose four candles and customize them with your own motifs, colors, and patterns using dyed candle wax. Expect a fun, cozy girls’ night out. Tickets are available here.

An Artful Start To The Valentine’s Weekend

Friday the 13th is a busy evening ahead of Valentine’s Day. We’re not superstitious, so we’ll be heading to one or more of these events. You should, too.

Beacon Open Studios’ Winter Weekend Art Show, called Power In Numbers, opens at The Yard (4 Hanna Lane) on Friday, February 13 with a reception between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM.

This curated group show is about unity and togetherness. That’s why this year’s applications came with a plus one as artists were invited to also submit a piece by someone else in addition to their own work. Applications are accepted for just a few more days until Sunday, January 25th. See Beacon Open Studios for full application details.

The Beacon Players will present an evening of love songs and moments from their upcoming production of the musical Jekyll & Hyde at the Howland Cultural Center (477 Main Street). Called Love Songs At The Howland, the show features the entire cast of The Beacon Players’ spring show. Tickets are available here.

A Literary Valentine’s

Stanza Books (508 Main Street) is celebrating the launch of a new novella published under its new press, Stanza Publishing, Demon Lover Witch, a dark fantasy set right here in Beacon, NY on Friday the 13th at 7:00 PM. Author and co-owner of Stanza Books Mark Harris will partner with poet, visual artist, and musician Tamalyn Miller to lead the audience on inner journeys through the book’s ancient landscapes. The event will be powered by words and sound. Space is limited, so RSVP to secure a spot here.

An Edgy Valentine’s Night

Every Saturday in February, Savage Wonder Arts Center (139 Main Street) will present its latest performance reading and immersive experience. Following the sold out run of January’s In The Bar Of A Tokyo Hotel, by Tennessee Williams, the production team has turned its attention to Moliére’s TARTUFFE, translated by World War II veteran, Richard Wilbur.  This biting satire follows the story of a family ensnared by a con artist. What makes this event a contender for an excellent Valentine’s night out is not just the reading—although that would be more than enough—but the transformation of the Parlor into a French salon where the audience become invited guests. The night begins at 6:00 PM with themed food and curated drinks. When the show begins, the story unfolds around the audience as they sit at private tables.  Get tickets here.

Valentine’s Night Music

There’s a double-bill performance at the Howland Cultural Center (477 Main Street) with singer-songwriters Sam Weber and Lily Talmers on Saturday, February 14th, starting at 7:30 PM.

Weber is a Portland-based songwriter immersed in the complexity of human existence who has earned songwriting credits from Grammy winner Madison Cunningham.

Lily Talmers is a songwriter and musician who captures the interplay of sorrow and joy. Raised in Michigan and now based in Brooklyn, NY, she draws from heady 60's folk revivalists such as Leonard Cohen and Judee Sill.

A Valentine’s Comedy Night

Join Two Way Brewing Co (18 West Main Street) for a Couples Counselling Comedy night with Alexa Cimino, James Tanford, Chris Bacchus, and Hannah Krasnow on Saturday, February 14th starting at 8:00 PM. Expect standup comedy, dating storytelling, and roasting. Audience participation is encouraged. Tickets are limited and you can get them here.

A Burlesque Spectacular

Industrial Arts Brewing Company (511 Fishkill Avenue) is promising a Valentine’s Day spectacular with a Love Untamed live band burlesque. Expect music, magic, and burlesque galore courtesy of Ame & The Witches.  Expect high energy music and a rotating cast of burlesque performers and surprise guests. Doors at 7pm, and the show starts at 8pm. $20 cover in advance, $25 at the door.

Estilo Y Vino Wine Bar (173 Main Street) is rolling out the pink carpet for an entire weekend of Valentine’s celebrations. Choose from a Tablao Flamenco Show on Friday, February 13th, a Jazz Trio with Andrew Stack from 7:30 PM on Saturday, February 14th, or brunch and bubbly on Sunday, February 15th.

Find A Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift On Main Street

Flower lovers never tire of being on the receiving end of a bouquet of colorful florals, especially in the depths of winter when brown, white, and gray seem to be the dominant force in our lives. Happily, it’s easy to shop local as there’s plenty of excellent options on and off Main Street.  Floral Good Times invites you to order online or to stop by the store (197 Main Street) and order by Saturday, February 7th. They’ve partnered with Håkan Chocolatier (462 Main Street) for anyone wanting to add some delicious chocolate bonbons to their order. Also, choose from Raven Rose (474 Main Street), or Mountain Laurel Florist (15 Tioronda Avenue). Head to Witch Hazel where you can pick up a gift card for a future craft workshop if your giftee enjoys learning something new. Or, if you love your Valentine’s bouquet so much, you might want to turn it into a piece of forever art to hang on the wall.

And that’s not all. Explore Beacon’s 90+ one-of-a-kind shops for more ideas of what to buy your one-and-only.
